Medical Coding is always the looked up part of the health care revenue cycle. It involves converting the medical information into standardized codes mainly for health care reimbursements and also for statistical data. Indian coders mostly work for the west and also for  the middle east to some extent. There’s always a big fuss on the coders from the recruitment and every healthcare company focuses on upgrading their coders by continuous training and pursuing international certifications. As coders have access to the protected health information usually medical coding was done in a company setup, let it be a large MNC with 100 plus coders or a small organisation with a handful.

As lifescience professionals when they want to pursue a career on this side of the healthcare industry, they were compelled to take a full time office based job. But this era of Covid-19 which is rewriting the set ways of life didn’t spare the medical coding industry as well. With the growing demands and lockdown still continuing, now the healthcare companies have lowered their bars and are continuing the business process by allowing the coders to work from their homes. This change will definitely affect the medical coding profession in the coming days even after the curfew is lifted.

Medical coding will no longer be a profession with rigid requirements, instead it will be a flexible job as in the west for the Indian coders. The recruitment standards of the healthcare companies will also change in the coming days, focusing more on quality work rather than age, locality,etc. As long as the PHI is handled with integrity this should have a good prognosis.
